Leveling up in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance can be difficult without Gospels and Grimoires, two incredibly rare items you can farm from Mitama enemies. With the changes made from the original game, both items now instantly level up Nahobino or the demons you recruit. This can help your team become much stronger without having to grind XP on low-level demon enemies before the next big fight.

Leveling up has always been difficult as you progress in the game since XP from demons scales based on the level of your demons and Nahobino. This means that the higher level you are, the less experience you gain from demons with a larger level gap. Thankfully, changes in SMT 5: Vengeance cause Gosepls and Grimoires to now provide an alternate way to level up without any XP scaling.

Where To Get Gospels & Grimoires

Hunt Down Mitama Enemies

How To Farm Gospels & Grimoires In Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance (2)

Both Gospels and Grimoires are dropped by a specific type of Mitama enemy, but these foes can only be encountered randomly along your journey. Mitamas in SMT 5: Vengeance come in many different colors that mark what type of loot they drop when defeated. These enemies look like teardrops with faces and are commonly found within points of interest on your map marked by your navigator.

A Gospel serves a different function compared to a Grimoire, as each can only level up a specific piece of your party. Gospels level up Nahobino, while Grimoires level up demons on your team recruited or fused throughout your adventures in SMT 5: Vengeance. Both items raise Nahobiono or a demon's XP to meet the total number needed to advance a level, but they do not raise your experience any further.

It is best to use a Gospel or Grimoire right after you level up and turn one raised level into two. This is because you can get the maximum value from both items by using them as a way to skip a full level grind and make up the largest possible gap of XP needed to get stronger.

Demons you level up fast through Grimoires should be advanced carefully, as you do not have ways to undo the skills you teach them. While Nahobino's build can be respeced at any time to create a new build, demons remain the same. You will have no way to go back and re-learn an ability you deleted in a demon's move list as they evolve and become stronger in SMT 5: Vengeance.

How To Farm Grimoires

Investigate Points Of Interest In The Overworld

Grimoires drop from Ara Mitamas, the red version of the teardrop demons you commonly find at points of interest in the Overworld. Red Mitama are fairly common, but they can be difficult to defeat even with the new gameplay elements of SMT 5: Vengeance. The elemental weaknesses of Mitama are randomized, meaning that each one you encounter will have a different vulnerability you cannot predict.

All Mitama will try to run away as early in a fight as they can, giving you very limited time to take them down to farm Grimoires. You have to guess what defenses a Mitama has or use your Spyglass to identify their weakness right away as a battle begins. Those who bring along a diverse group of demons with a variety of elemental attacks in their party can exploit a Mitama's weakness to kill it quickly.

Ara Mitama can sometimes be beaten through strong attacks without their weakness ever being targeted, but it is better to guarantee their defeat. Once these kinds of Mitama are taken down, they have a chance to drop multiple Grimoires for your team. This gives you a chance to level up a demon you're trying to train up multiple times or bypass the XP grind on multiple allies in your collection.

As you can see in the above video by YouTube creator The Game Looters, a Grimoire can only be used on a demon at a lower level than Nahobino. This makes Gospels a rarer and oftentimes more important item to farm first.

Search For The Rarest Type Of Mitamas

Gospels are dropped by Kushi Mitamas, the gray-colored version of the demon that is the rarest form to find in the Overworld. Compared to the Ara Mitamas, Kushi Mitamas have a chance to appear in one of every twenty encounters at most in SMT 5: Vengeance. You should always take the opportunity to eliminate a Kushi Mitama whenever you see one, even if your current goal isn't to farm Gospel items.

A few Gospels are also given as rewards for completing subquests in the game, making it worth the effort to complete all optional missions you come across. Even if your navigator marks a Kushi Mitama on your map, these creatures are still as hard to identify as the Ara Mitamas who drop Grimoires. Despite these creatures never being as difficult as a boss like the Trumpeter in SMT 5: Vengeance, they are still annoying to fight.

Kushi Mitama function in the same way as Ara Mitama, with randomized weaknesses that are impossible to know before a fight starts. You have to use your Spyglass to see a Gray Mitama's vulnerabilities before it can flee.

Those desperate to find the right kinds of Mitama can purchase the Mitama Dance of EXP DLC for $2.99 to increase the spawn rates of all types of Mitama. This adds a new option in your settings to boost the appearance of Kushi and Ara Mitamas, alongside other types of these demons. Anyone who has been struggling to reach the right level to match endgame enemies may want to look into this option.

The increased Mitama spawn rate can be toggled on and off with the DLC purchased, so don't worry about your encounters only turning into Mitama fights. Even with the spawn rates bolstered, Kushi Mitamas are still much rarer than others that show up during encounters. The best way to farm Gospels and Grimoires in Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is to keep hunting relentlessly for the kind of Mitama you need to find.
