Steuben County's district attor ney was asked to Investigate a cnarge that Republican campaign funds had been solicited illegally. In Keystone State the fiery Gif- ford Pinchot gave up his Senator ial quest against David A. Reed, veteran Senator, who in turn lost out to Joseph J.

Guffey, Democrat, the first to represent Pennsylvania in Washington in better than 60 years. Pennsylvania Democracy made sweeping inroads and sent its nominee, George H. Earle, to the executive mansion at Harrisburg. Louis T. McFadden, Canton, who represented the 15th Pennsylvania District in the House for 20 years, lost out to C.

Elmer Dietrich, Tunkhannock. And in a post-election action Attorney Emory B. Rockwell, Wells-boro, was asked by the court to explain charges he made during his campaign, as Democratic nominee for the General Assembly. The charges were withdrawn after two hearings. Fires and Storms In mid-January three Watkins Glen business places went up in flames1 and three more were damaged in a $200,000 fire.

In February Hornell had a business section fire that sent more than 100 thinly-clad apartment dwellers into an icy night. Elkland had a $25,000 business section fire the same month. Temperatures went as low as 42 below zero Feb. 28 at Lawrence Corners. Coudersport had previously held the record with 40 below.

Half a hozen damaging summer storms broke over the region. One of them cost two men their lives. Red Bunion Derby A bit of press agentry that captured the fancy of newspapers far and near came along in mid-August when a group of Indian braves left Old Fort Niagara and ran to Washington with a message for Great White Father Roosevelt. Indian authorities found what they said were flaws in the names of some of the copper-hued runners but they sounded swell and no one had the heart to regard the stunt as anything but a heap interesting yarn, publicity or not.
