Campos-Duffy defended the Trump administration’s controversial practice of separating immigrant families arrested at the US border on June 21, 2018, when she appeared on the Fox News program The Ingraham Angle. She stated, “The detention centers are far safer than the journey that these children just came on, and I will say this…people aren’t stupid,” in reference to the facilities where the children were housed. “Gosh, the conditions of the detention centers are better than some of the projects that I grew up in,” said one African-American I spoke with. Black Vox reporter Jane Coaston, writer Nikole Hannah-Jones for the New York Times, Essence magazine’s Britni Danielle, and filmmaker Ava DuVernay were among those who immediately voiced their disapproval of the remarks.

The following day, Michael LaRosa, Jill Biden’s press secretary, responded by declaring that the remarks were “disgusting” and that “[Campos-Duffy and Fox News] know better.” Their viewers deserve better, and they can do better. I hope they will make an apologies to the First Lady and put this kind of conversation in the trash, where it belongs.”
