FAQs

Why is my naan bread not fluffy? ›

Naan doesn't get bubbles – Pan not hot enough, dough not moist enough or improper leavening. Naan turns hard – Toasting for too long, not enough moisture in the dough, toasting on low heat or not kneading the dough enough.

Why isn't my naan bread puffing up? ›

The puffing and bubbles also directly contribute to the fluffy, chewy texture of great naan. If you aren't getting bubbles on your naan at all try turning up the heat a little, on a skillet medium-high heat is usually the sweet spot. If that still doesn't work your problem may be the dough.

What can I substitute for naan bread? ›

7 Naan Bread Substitutes: Quick Swaps for Recipes
  • 1 – Pita Bread.
  • 2 – Tortillas.

Why is naan so good? ›

Naan bread also has a buttery flavor due to the ghee and buttermilk in the dough, which adds an extra dimension of flavor compared to pita bread's more neutral taste. Naan can be used in place of pita bread for many dishes, adding a unique twist to traditional recipes.

Why add egg to naan? ›

Egg – Helps bind your dough. Garlic – Mince it to give your garlic naan recipe a yummy and savory taste. Salted butter – Adds more flavor and richness.

Is yeast or baking powder better for naan? ›

So anyway – this naan bread doesn't use yeast – it uses baking powder and soda. I've made versions with both yeast and baking powder and I really love both. You're still going to let this one rise for a while, so don't get TOO excited. It only helps with the flavor.

How to get naan to puff up? ›

Heat a frying pan as hot as you can on the hob (you need to use a frying pan that can go under the grill). Once hot, place a rolled naan onto the pan and count to 20 seconds. Now place the pan under the grill and wait for the naan to puff up and cook. This will take between 30 seconds and 1 minute.

Why do you put yogurt in naan bread? ›

The extra protein from the yogurt eliminates the importance of advanced gluten development. The yogurt also adds some fat. The fat keeps the dough nice and soft and prevents the naan from hardening too much during the cooking process.

How do you make naan dough rise faster? ›

Set the bowl of dough in the microwave and shut the door.

Leave the glass of water in the microwave with the dough. The glass of water and the heat from the microwave will create a warm, moist environment that will help the dough rise faster.

What bread is closest to naan? ›

Kulcha. This next bread is often confused with naan due to its similar appearance. While naan is usually made with yeast and yogurt or milk, kulcha is usually made with baking powder and baking soda. One of the most popular forms of kulcha is Amritsari Kulcha, originating from the Punjabi city of Amritsar.

Is naan healthier than regular bread? ›

While it may contain more carbs and sugars, it earns its reputation as a healthy alternative with its relatively generous amounts of protein and fiber. Despite its high carb content, naan can be considered a more nutrient-dense alternative to white bread and pita.

What is the best type of naan bread? ›

Some of the most popular flavoured variations are plain naan, Peshwari naan, garlic and coriander naan and cheese naan. A good plain naan dough needs strong bread flour, yeast, black onion seeds, milk, and yoghurt – to give the naan that tanginess.

Why is naan unhealthy? ›

As stated earlier, naan is high in fat, and specifically high in saturated fats. Pita on the other hand is considered to be a low fat food.

What race eats naan? ›

today, naan has traveled a long way in becoming a favorite with multiple gravy-based dishes in indian cuisine and a staple in iran, south asia, and many middle eastern countries.

How do I make my bread fluffier? ›

Lubricate With Oil. One of the easiest ways our bakers follow to make bread soft and fluffy is by using 1-2 tablespoons of lubricant/fats such as vegetable oil to wet the ingredients. This will prevent the formation of excess gluten, as excess gluten makes bread chewy.

Why is my bread dense and not fluffy? ›

Over proofing can be just as detrimental to the density of your bread as under proofing. Over proofed bread means that the carbon dioxide has escaped the structure. The gluten structure caved and the air in your loaf has escaped. This results in a denser loaf.
