What the heck is chutney? ›

Chutney is a condiment or spread made from chopped fruit cooked with vinegar, spices and sometimes sugar, that can be served fresh or preserved. It's often associated with Indian cuisine.

What is the difference between relish and chutney? ›

Chutney vs Relish

Both condiments are made with chopped vegetables, vinegar, and added spices. Typically, chutney has a softer consistency and contains a variety of fruit pieces. Relish usually contains one type of vegetable and no fruit.

Do you put homemade chutney in jars hot or cold? ›

Fill the hot dry jars right to the top – preserves shrink slightly on cooling and a full jar means less trapped condensation. Seal the jars while still hot. This rule applies to all jams, jellies, pickles and chutneys.

Why is my chutney so vinegary? ›

Our answer

If you made a double quantity it may take longer for the acid in the vinegar to mellow, unless you used a particularly wide pan that would help the vinegar to evaporate more easily. So it is worth tasting the chutney before you transfer it to jars, to make sure that the mixture is not too acidic.

What is chutney called in America? ›

Relish. Chutney and relish are two popular condiments, and the names are often interchanged. The confusion is understandable because chutneys can be savory, and relishes can be sweet. In general, chutneys have a chunky spreadable consistency much like a preserve and are usually made with fruit.

How do I know when my chutney is ready? ›

Can I use old jam jars for chutney? ›

It's quite alright to reuse jam jars and they don't have to be Kilner jars either. It's not necessary to put a greaseproof or a waxed disc in the top of the jar - just fill it nearly to the top with the aim of having the smallest air gap. This is to prevent mould spores in the air spoiling your chutney.

Why is my apple chutney not thickening? ›

Our answer. When you make chutney its consistency is determined by the evaporation of liquid as the chutney cooks. So if possible you should use a wide pan as this has a larger surface area which means that liquid will evaporate more quickly and should help to prevent the fruit in the chutney from becoming too soft.

Why does my chutney taste bitter? ›

Adjust the Herbs and Spices: Bitterness in chutney can sometimes be caused by an excessive amount of certain herbs or spices. Consider reducing the quantity of bitter ingredients such as fenugreek leaves (methi), mustard seeds, or certain greens like spinach.

What if my homemade chutney is too runny? ›

If your chutney is too runny or your recipe calls for a thickening agent, always use cornflour mixed with a little of the vinegar. Cornflour is gluten free. Always to this at the very end because thickening your chutney like this will make catch and burn easily.

What does chutney taste good on? ›

Chutneys can be served as a dipping sauce for naan, a condiment for different curries, an accompaniment to the popular street food dabeli, or even as a spread on toast to add bursts of concentrated flavor.

Does chutney go with cheese and crackers? ›

Whether in sandwiches, an ingredient in cooking, even on a pizza; the flavours of cheese balances so well when perfectly partnered. There is no better pairing in our view than cheese and crackers with chutney (and relish too of course).

Do you eat chutney hot or cold? ›

Typically, you would serve chutney when it has been set to room temperature, this is where the condiment is the best performing. We now know that chutney does work well with hot food, but pairing it with cold food can satisfy pretty much anyone.
